Chervis Isom

Chervis Isom was a Birmingham attorney who grew up in segregated Birmingham during the 1940s and 1950s. He is the author of The Newspaper Boy: Coming of Age in Birmingham, Alabama During the Civil Rights Era, a memoir about growing up in a culture of white supremacist in the 1950s and gradually awakening to the injustices of racism through encounters with progressive influences, including Northerners Vern and Helen Miller and Birmingham attorney Abe Berkowitz, whose law firm he joined after graduating from law school in 1967. Berkowitz was a prominent civil rights activist in Birmingham throughout the Civil Rights Movement.
